Abstract

Background:

-Nationally, hospitalizations for opioid abuse and related infections have increased since 2002-2012

  • 301,707 to 520,275 hospitalizations for opioid abuse/dependence
  • 3,421 to 6,535 hospitalizations for related infections

-Hospital charges related to IE have increased four-fold since 2002 and continue to rise.

  • $15 billion for opioid use/dependence
  • $700 million for related infections

-PWID are at risk for misusing PICC lines

-There may be differences in length of stay, treatment strategies, and cost for IE between PWID and non-PWID

-Few studies have investigated the economic burden of infective endocarditis in a rural state
